Begining in January, 2012, on my weekly blog, working with George Ella Lyon's ideas for an Appalachian alphabet book, I shared some of my photos for each letter. Then, in August, she refined her ideas to an actual manuscript. The images in this gallery are a growing collection of possibilities for the manuscript. Her words are wonderful. The question will be about the photos -- in the business of picture books, the norm is
not to use photos. However, both George Ella and I see real possibilities for kids everywhere to take photos of the place where they live in order to make their own place book. In this day and age, photos are everywhere, but being able to notice the uniqueness of where a person is living is a skill that is rapidly being marginalized.
Anyway that is partly while these photos are gathering here. Once the words are under contract, I can add them to this site.
