The first evening of the annual week-long Appalachian Writers Workshop this summer was a tribute to Mike Mullins. It took place at the
Hindman Settlement School, of which Mike had been the Executive Director for 34 years. He died suddenly on February 12, 2012. The workshop is a vibrant community whose members are devoted to Mike and the conditions he provided for the workshop to thrive. I took just one or two photos of each participant in the tribute so as not to be disruptive. I have decided to post these photos for the many people who would have wanted to be with us but who couldn't get there, with thanks to everyone who shared poems, memories, feelings and songs. There were plenty of tears and laughter and gratitude that evening.
